APRIL

<<< SOME LISTINGS MISSING >>>

1 (April Fools Day ) till May 1st ( Mayday ) International Month of Pie-rect action against Capital and State – Dessert the State in the Lead up to Mayday. Following on the fine tradition of the Biotic Baking Brigade and the many individuals who have inspired us all with pies in the faces of Bill Gates, Milton Freidman, Steve Bracks et al we call on you to partake in Operation Dessert Storm.

"What better way to draw attention to the often faceless leaders of the corporate world, shameful 'journalists', dodgy politicians and anyone who deserves a face full of dissent. The 'global movement' is often mis-represented in the mainstream media. You can't mis-represent a face full of cream. It sends a clear message to the recipient and the media that what these people are doing is ridiculous and that you are prepared to let them know - and have some fun while doing it!

The pie is the great equaliser. How many times have you wanted to see whipped cream smeared on John Howard's glasses or see Tony Blair choking on a strawberry? Now is your chance - mobilise en masse and pie! Operation Dessert Storm is a global month of action between April Fools Day and May Day 2000. Of course you can be fashionably late or early..."

Ensure that your actions are captured on film and upload your photos, favourite recipes and pieing tips to the site www.dessertstorm.org

20-22 Summit of the Americas, Quebec

Quebec City has the ‘honour’ of hosting the Summit of the Americas, which brings together the 34 heads of state of North, South and Central America, as well as the Caribbean (except Cuba of course).

"The Summit intends to talk about issues like hemispheric integration and migration, security and terrorism, democracy and human rights, as well as the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) agreement. The Summit of the Americas is in many ways a pre-packaged media spectacle for the leaders of the hemisphere, in a controlled atmosphere of gala dinners, cocktail parties and photo ops. Thousands of delegates and media representatives are to attend the gathering, as well as thousands of police in what will be the largest security and police operation in Canadian history."

* One of the summits major goals is putting the final touches on the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) agreement which aims to establish a "free trade" zone that would extend NAFTA (the North American Free Trade Agreement – see SchNEWS 200) to the tip of South America .

As usual the main purpose of this trade area is to allow corporations to reap greater profits by getting rid of what they perceive as barriers to trade – silly little things like environmental regulations, unionised workplaces, restrictions on child labour etc.

* Mass demonstrations are promised with the Summit of the Americas Welcoming Committee aiming to shut the whole thing down as well as organising a Carinival Against Capitalism throughout the whole of April culminating in a mass day of action on April 20th.

27 July- September 2nd Action Camp against the Itoiz Dam Come to the action camp at Itoiz, in the Basque Country and show your resistance to this dangerous and destructive project which has been driven by corrupt politicians, some of whom have served prison sentences for fraud relating to the funds of the dam project. The dam was declared illegal in 1995 by the Supreme Court of Spain because it would destroy areas designated as nature protection zones. However, the construction work continued, and in March 2000 the Constitutional Court of Spain legalized the construction of the dam by changing the laws only for Itoiz. Now they are beginning to fill it, and are cutting down trees and removing topsoil to prepare for the reservoir. For the last 17 years local people have resisted the dam - from juridicial challenge and technical reports proving it to be unsafe, to mass demonstrations involving over 10,000 people, to sabotage of construction machinery, and the direct action campaign of Solidarios con Itoiz, who went across the whole of Europe, building solidarity and spreading information. Eight of their members face 5 years in prison for an action which stopped the construction of the dam for one year. solidarias@gmx.de www.infoladen-daneben.de http://wagenstraat.squat.net/itoiz/

This set of listings mostly come from snapshots of the SchNEWS website taken by the Wayback Machine. By this stage, SchNEWS only printed P&P listings in the issues when there was a special event or festival, usually in summer - these have been included here. Because SchNEWS didn't back up the listings - once they were out of date they were deleted - there is no full back-up.
