CALL OF THE WILDERNESS

ACTIVISTS SQUAT OUTDOOR CENTRE IN FOREST OF DEAN

Here's one we missed – although the fight's still going strong.

The Wilderness centre in Mitcheldean in the Forest of Dean was taken by activists back in January after budget cuts forced it to close in August last year.

The disused outdoor pursuits centre (which the council was planning to flog off for a quick buck) now features regular skillshare workshops on subjects as diverse as wild food foraging, woodland crafts, herbal medicine, organic food growing, yoga, singing, bender making, knot tying, chi/qi gong and weaving yer own underwear out of nettles (honest!).

Campaign group Reclaim the Fields held a two day gathering at the centre, resisting an injunction which Gloucestershire County Council had gained just a few days before. Over 60 people attended and no eviction took place.

A separate group Protect the Wilderness Centre is now in negotiations to actually buy the place.
