BRIGHT-ON-ING UP THE CITY
Following the huge success of last year's TAA squat (SchNEWS 626), artists from the area gathered once again to splash a bit of colour around Brighton's abandoned buildings.
After a successful swoop on Wednesday 26th, a place right on the seafront was occupied with huge windows to show off the works of art being created inside. Several big pieces decorated the walls by Friday afternoon. People were preparing for the opening party when, without warning, the local bobbies stormed in.
Despite the fact negotiations had taken place between the police and event organisers and there wasn't really a legal leg for the coppers to stand on, officers promptly cleared the building of all occupants, taking personal details from everyone and making one arrest for suspected electricity theft. The building was then sealed and the autonomous art project came to an abrupt end.
