Reader 1995 | Forward! FORWARD!In the infusion of sub-culture in this country is a growth. It is not malignant and it is not a disease. It doesn't represent financial or economic growth. It is an acute sensitivity and awareness, a fluid energy which has burst through the fabric of the static state of our oh-so-safe society - and, in pulling hard at the thread, threatens to completely unweave it. Positivity breeds creativity. Necessity breeds ingenuity. The growing DiY culture that has arisen among the young and marginalised should be seen as something with a positive contribution to make to society, not as a burden or something that must be stamped out with the full force of a government that is paranoid and psychotic, desperate and callous. The movement has no temple, no figure-head. There are no leaders, no membership forms to fill in. We are living in a state of flux, major change is on the way. We are witnessing a mental gear-change of Galileo proportions. The pace of change must be far quicker than waiting on the hopes of the next General Election. The average age of Conservative Party members is 62; for Labour Party members it's 32. The only split between them is a generational one not an ideological one. The policies remain, to all intents and purposes, identical. Personalities, image, wordplay. Anything but the issues. It isn't real. There is no such thing as parliamentary debate anymore. So, take part. Vote for Yourself - because positive direct action is the only effective way forward. We are 'naive', 'childish', 'simplistic' 'dysfunctional anarchists' 'jumping on the bandwagon of today's trendy topic'. We are 'supreme idealists', 'spongers', 'woolly liberals', 'zealots' and 'airheads' engaged in 'uncharacteristic protests of a minority'. Are we? Read on. You can tell you are having an effect when you are attacked - or in the case of Criminal Justice Act - outlawed. The measure of any society is how it treats those at the bottom. In which case the question needs to be asked: Is this justice? The only way to culturally deprogramme yourself is to drop out of the mainstream channels of communication and choose your own. The only way to understand is to go out and see it for yourself. Wake Up! Wake Up!
