Update 26/01/14

Update Sunday 26th 18.30

Around 150 anti-fascists, Anti Fascist Network, Unite Against Fascism and a few Orthodox Jews assembled at Holborn tube from 12.30. The Jobbik supporters were mostly coralled inside the tube although knots of them were floating around outside.

Rumours are that Jobbik struggled to find somewhere for their rally after several venues pulled out. The cops eventually hit on a compromise solution of a rain-sodden rally at Speaker's corner in Hyde park, a short tube ride away. Anti-fascists walked there and gave them the benefit of their opinions.

The Jobbik rally was a dismal sight - sixty or seventy people and a couple of HUngarian flags. There was no sign of any British or other fascist support.

Anti-fascists will be assembling in London this Sunday (26th) to oppose a meeting between the BNP, Golden Dawn and one of Europe's bigger fascist parties – the Hungarian Jobbik.

The European elections might not be until May but Europe's far-right are already putting the wheels in motion as far as coalition building goes. Gabor Vona, the leader of the virulently anti-semitic Jobbik is coming to the UK for a meet-up with representatives of the British National Party and Greece's Golden Dawn with a view to putting together an alliance.

Now Jobbik don't go in for the kind of thinly veiled anti-semitism popular here in the UK – nope they're straight out the 1930s - In November 2012, Marton Gyongyosi, the party’s deputy parliamentary leader, called for a security register of Hungarian Jewish legislators and ministers. Gyongyosi said: “I think such a conflict makes it timely to tally up people of Jewish ancestry who live here, especially in the Hungarian parliament and the Hungarian government, who, indeed, pose a security risk in Hungary.”

Jobbik's street level support, at one point rallied into an organisation called Magyar Gárda, (or Hungarian defence) have been involved in violent atacks on ethnic minorities. At point the party was the third largest in Hungary

Nick Griffin claimed last month that the three parties had a “common core set of values” and he was seeking a formal alliance with Golden Dawn and Jobbik.

Counter protesters will be assembling.
