BWRAP is for Black women who have been raped or assaulted. We offer advice and support; reporting to the police, seeking medical help, getting legal advice; getting re-housed or finding a refuge; claiming benefits; getting protection from further attack; preparing for court hearings and going to the court; winning compensation. BWRAP campaigns; against immigration controls which promote rape and violence against the Child Support Act. We campaign so that neither racism, sexism nor intimidation by the police, the law and courts can keep Black women from getting justice, and to eliminate the poverty which makes Black women the most vulnerable.

To link local/regional groups opposed to the Criminal Justice Act and keep information on actions and significant events flowing. The Network is made up of 80+ independent local groups who are trying to wake their communities up to the dangers of the Act. The Network also includes special interst groups which are being specifically targeted by the CJA ie squatters, travellers, free-party organisers, hunt sabs, road protesters etc.
The general aims of the Network are diverse and vary from group to group but overall, the idea is: to empower, to help save a dying democracy and to make people realise that they can be part of the solution by standing up for what they believe in. Most groups are united by a common appreciation that non-violent direct action is a vital key to reclaiming our democratic voice. Above all, many people in the anti-CJA campaign have learned that protest and politics can be fun. Let’s try and keep it that way!
RESOURCES: Most Network groups are in the usual shoestring situation. Most useful for putting people in touch with like-minded people in their own area and as a referral service. AIMS:
To oppose and undertake to sabotage, where practical, the pursuit, harassment or killing of any sentient creature for sport, pleasure, profit or population control, save where this necessary for their own individual benefit, until such time as these practices cease to exist.
Formed in 1963, the HSA represents the longest-running campaign of direct action in the country. Using a range of non-aggressive interventionist and diversionary tactics, hunt saboteurs save the lives of thousands of hunted creatures every year. The success of these tactics can be measured by the response of those who hunt - it was lobbying from grouse shooting interests that principally led to the introduction of the law of aggravated trespass.
INTERESTS: All bloodsports and related activities.
RESOURCES:
* advice on tactics and equipment for sabotaging hunts.
* database on every organised hunt in Britain and activities and interests of
prominent hunters.

* advice, analysis and monitoring of implementation of public order legislation
* salesgoods, leaflets - price list available on request.

AIMS:
Liberty believes in a society built upon the democratic participation of all its members and based upon the principles of justice, openness, the right to dissent and respect for diversity. Accordingly, we aim to secure the equal rights and liberties of every one, individuals and groups, insofar as they do not infringe the rights and liberties of others, and oppose any abuse or excessive use of power by the state against its people. We also recognise that the erosion of civil liberties often begins with attacks on the rights of those who are marginalised within society - such attacks undermine the rights of us all.
As a pressure group we work to protect and extend human rights and civil liberties by campaigning at local and national level. There are local and student Liberty groups in many parts of the country. Our legal team pursues test cases through the British and European courts. We co-ordinate a network of volunteer solicitors. We provide free written information about rights issues. We lobby parliament, providing facts, figures and briefings for MPs, giving evidence to government enquiries and select committees and draft amendments to proposals and parliamentary bills. We act as a watchdog, analysing and commenting on the implications of proposed changes to legislation, and alerting the public and the media to any dangers and threats. We research and publish reports on a wide range of human rights issues and have an extensive civil liberties library used by journalists, researchers and members of the public.
Liberty is currently running a public order monitoring project to monitor the use of the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act (1994). If you are arrested, stopped, evicted, turned back, have your home or equipment seized, or are in any other way effected by the Act, please write and tell us. If you would like more information on the project please let us know.
We do not receive, nor would we accept, any funding from central government. Our main source of income is members subscriptions, we also receive money in the form of grants for projects, donations and income from sale of publications.
For civil liberties in Scotland, contact the Scottish Council for Civil Liberties, 146 Holland Street, Glasgow, G2 4NG. For Northern Ireland, contact CAJ, 45/47 Donegal Street, Belfast BT1 2FG.

“As a 45-year old taxpayer, I object to this persecution. I am glad my son enjoys the camaraderie and happiness that is the predominant experience at a rave. I am proud that he is intelligently experienced in the use of drugs, although I am horrified that this makes him a criminal. By taking away the freedom of one group, the freedom of us all is lost. I need my right to silence, my son needs his right to dance in groups of more than 10 people.
All of us need the right to opt out of conventional lifestyles.”

Supporting prisoners: we support working class prisoners, encourage other people to write to/support them, and fight for a world without prisons/capitalism.
We publish a quarterly bulletin, ‘taking liberties’. We write to prisoners here/abroad, and publish names/addresses for other people to write/take up. We mostly support people imprisoned for involvement in class struggles (strikers, poll tax, CJA prisoners etc), people framed by the police, prisoners resisting the prison system
London ABC is part of a network of ABC groups. The others have the same aims (more or less), we meet as a network, but organise largely autonomously, though all groups distribute ‘Taking Liberties’ and ABC leaflets. London ABC/‘Taking Liberties’ at the London address is broadly speaking useable as a ‘national’ contact.

To preserve the ‘green lung’ of Leyton and Walthamstow marshes and maintain people’s rights to full and free open access over the whole of these former Lammas Lands (common pasture/meadowland).
The Lammas meadows of Leyton and Walthamstow were given to the people of the two parishes earlier this century in exchange for their rights of common grazing. Since then, they have come under the administration of a quango called the ‘Lea Valley Regional Park Authority’ whose first act was to attempt to dig the marshes up for gravel extraction! The NLLDC was formed to oppose the continuing encroachment of ‘leisure facilities’ (such as livery stabling, car-parks, cinemas) onto our open land. We use many campaigning techniques, including lobbying councillors, letter-writing and occasionally direct action. We also organise picnics, walks and occasional festivals on the marshes to encourage people to use and enjoy them and to join us in campaigning for their preservation. We are allied with No New Lea Valley Roads Campaign.

To stop the extension of the M11 into East London, by non-violent direct action and all kinds of campaigning.
The building of the road will encourage yet more traffic, 1000 people will lose their homes, there will be a barrier like the Berlin Wall through our community and resources will be wasted that could be better used on providing public transport. Our campaign started by opposing the road at the 1989 public inquiry and direct action got going in 1993. The Chestnut tree on George Green and the Wanstonia and Claremont Road eviction were highlights of the campaign, which is still active.

1. To stop a major road being built up the Lea Valley to serve as an “Eastern By-Pass” for the M25 orbital motorway. To oppose Waltham Forest Council’s proposals for a “Relief Road” from Stratford to Walthamstow to bypass Leyton.
In the late 1960’s two options were offered by the department of Transport for the M11 motorway extension; one through the Roding Valley and Leytonstone to Hackney Wick, and the other through the Lea Valley. The present M11 Link Road route was chosen because it was cheaper, but the alternative - connecting Blackwall Tunnel and Stratford to the M25 - was kept open as an option for the future. A motorway by stealth is now being imposed on the valley. Most of the Lea Valley route is already in place (the A1055 North-South Route).
Despite the scheme’s rejection following a recent lengthy Public Inquiry, Waltham Forest Borough Council continue to promote the construction of the “Leyton Relief Road”. This would complete the route except for a 1.5 mile gap on Walthamstow Marshes, which are a designated Nature Reserve, containing a Bird Sanctuary and two SSSI’s. The NNLVRC is an umbrella for a number of local interest groups - including the Southern Lea Valley Federation, Residents against Traffic, Lammas Lands Defence Committee, Friends of the Earth and the No M11 Link Road Campaign - all of which are opposed to motorway construction in the Lea Valley.

The Rainbow Centre’s project was set up in the aftermath of the Rio Earth Summit 1992 as a DIY ‘grass roots’ by-the-people-for-the-people initiative. The Rainbow Collective/Tribe, formed mainly by squatter-homeless people and joined by supporters from all levels of society came together with a belief in non-violent local direct action for the environment, to create a space where people from all races, cultures and walks of life can come together to affect positive change.

encourage communities to take direct action in reclaiming their
streets from the domination of the car and the vested interests they
serve.
To promote and effect the use of the streets to that of the needs of
cyclists and pedestrians.
R.T.S. is a pro-active group, instead of reacting to the government agenda we aim to force them to react to ours. By moving the debate away from anti-roads into anti-car we hope to generate public awareness of the wider questions behind the road issue. At present urban planning is biased towards the accommodation of the car rather than that of the people who live in an area. Our aims are to show positive alternatives to present street use and turn them into places where communities have the right to self determination so that we can be responsible for our own resources and environment. Examples of actions would include street parties, painting cycle lanes, visiting car shows and editing car posters.
