links between this policy and the structures of capitalism and repression.

are risking their lives to enter the UK and are only surviving with
the illegal solidarity of local people. The situation
has worsened dramatically since the forced closure of the Red Crosss

- GARBAGE GAIA
- this is not a bad horror b-movie script: there is a monster
slick of degrading plastic matter which floats just under the surface
of the Pacific Ocean. No plastic doesn't 'biodegrade', it simply
breaks down to smaller particles - which are toxic to marine life.

- AIRBUSTED - Injunction taken out against Heathrow Camp For Climate
Action - If you were in any doubt that the Camp for Climate
Action is gonna have a big impact this year then check out Heathrow
airport's reaction to having been chosen as the venue! This year
the camp will be at the world's busiest airport which is a bigger
source of CO2 emissions than most countries. Of course it's sheer
lunacy in this time of ecological crisis but the aviation industry
are pushing to almost double the airport's capacity by increasing
flights and building a third runway. The battle to stop them will
be one of the most important environmental battles in Western Europe.

- PIG IGNORANCE
- Charges dropped as Oxford cops accidently tape themselves -
Fourteen campaigners against the Oxford Animal lab, charged with
various public order offences, walked free on May 30th after revelations
of a police stitch-up. During the trial, a transcript of a dictaphone
tape recorded by the cop's Tactical Advisor on the day was presented
as evidence by the defence. The hour-long tape conclusively shows
that Thames Valley Police are conspiring with Oxford University
to smash the campaign.

- TRUTH-ACHE - Its the big fight over the truth.
In the blue corner we have the US governments official version
of 9-11 events and in all the other corners we have proponents of
various conspiracy theories. But in these days of governments
caught telling outright lies about WMDs etc, and a massive groundswell
of cynicism about any official pronouncement - just what is a conspiracy
theory? What happens when common sense is hijacked and
the fringe goes mainstream? |

- ON THE FIDEL -
Battle for the future of Cuba after Castro - Fidel Castros
laid up in bed, with possibly weeks to live. Hes had to hand
the reins of power to his brother Raul, only five years younger
and not terribly popular. Cubas status as an alternative model
of development for Latin America is clearly under threat. Over the
water in Miami thousands of exiled Cubans were disappointed that
Old Fifi made his 80th birthday earlier this week (13th August)
but its the end of an era and what happens next is the hot
topic on the streets of Havana.

the G8 circus is re-forming (but almost certainly not reforming)
for a St Petersburg-based shindig over the weekend of 15-17 July.
As activists gear up for the most full-on anti summit mobilisation

disrupt or inconvenience its chairmanship of the worlds most

- PIGS MIGHT LIE - Sussex police have shot themselves in the
foot with unerring aim again after charges were dropped against
eight activists relating to a mass demo outside Brighton bomb-builders
EDO MBM on May 31st last year. Three of the defendants were up for
the Go directly to jail offence of assault police,
and others for Section 5 and obstruction of the Highway. The charges
were formally dropped on Thursday afternoon, and a CPS statement
claimed that as the injunction had now effectively collapsed it
was no longer in the public interest to continue the
prosecutions.

- YARL-BOO SUCKS!
Last month the Yarls Wood Detention Centre in Bedfordshire
burned in a fire. The centre for detaining asylum seekers
the equivalent to a category B prison surrounded by razor wire -
opened in November 2001, cost £100 million and is run by Group
4. But ever since it opened there's been constant protests about
conditions. In January nearly all the detainees, went on hunger
strike for 24 hours, while on the afternoon of 14th February, the
day the fire started, trouble flared after a woman was handcuffed
so she could be taken to hospital. At some point later a fire started.
Its not clear where, although many detainees believe it started
in the reception area to which they have no access. Shocking stories
from those who were inside on the day are only now emerging.
